"Ledger ELW & Co. 1874" contains records of payments and receipts for cotton, real estate, and accounts pertaining to other commercial enterprises of Edward L. Wells & Company. Accounts include Beach Hill No. 1 & 2, brokerage No. 1 (Sav.) and No. 2 (Genl.), charges (including bills paid for drayage, shipping, insurance, putting up samples, and brokerage), cotton accounts (containing a list of the names of companies and individuals to whom checks have been written), and cotton. Additional accounts include an exchange account (listing a payment to Charleston account) and an expense account (including amounts paid for office rent, telegrams, letters, petty cash, R. T[ilghman] S[mith] fees to cotton, wood, "morning news," and stationery; and amounts received from petty cash, the sale of "cotton tops," and L[esesne] & W[ells]). Other accounts include the house account of R.T. Smith (which includes expenses paid for groceries, crockery, coal, petty cash, and Mrs. Lee for room; and income from Beach Hill and L[esesne] & W[ells]) and the account of Lesesne & Wells. The account of Alex McNeil (ship) includes money paid out for U.S. Court, the Custom House, and the British Consul, as well as money received from L & Wells. Additional accounts include petty cash, sterling exchange, and R. Tilghman Smith (checks written for King Street taxes).
